Many people underestimate the true value of formulating a hypothesis when testing an ad. They would rather go through the creation of various ads, set them live, wait an endless wait, and THEN hope for the best. The remaining people who do no formulation of hypothesis for ad testing are simply and very bluntly put, afraid of being wrong.
What these people are unaware of is that the purpose of a hypothesis is for it to be used as a skeletal framework for the execution of tests, and to be used as a reference point to construe the ensuing results. If you can prove a hypothesis wrong, then good for you, but that is not what a hypothesis is meant for. When it comes to testing, there are no rights or wrong. A good hypothesis is created by crucial questions like “Why am I not getting more traffic?” “What can I do to increase my web traffic?” The answer could vary from “Lack of search engine optimization” to “Maybe I should offer them a better variety”. Whatever the case may be, it’s important that you find your weak points, focus on them and try to come up with as many solutions as you can.
Focus on the details, not on the outcome, and you will always come up with a good hypothesis. Keep on testing new hypothesis, keep on getting varied results. The more results you have, the more knowledge you’ll gain. However, your focus should be on getting information, and not positive results.
