Online Advertising worth $100 Billion in 2012
Research from eMarketer revealed that the figure for online global advertising expenditures crossed the
$100-billion mark for the first time in 2012, and will increase in the current year by 15.1%, giving us a
sum total of $118.4 billion by the end of 2013.
This huge number brings our attention to how quickly online ads have touched the 100 mark, keeping in
mind that less than 20 years ago, these figures were zero. The internet now belongs to every individual
across the globe who is economically active and knows what he wants. Online advertising accounts for
one in five ad dollars, and it will be a surprise for none if the global marketing expenditure to remain
steady double-digits throughout the next 3 years.
North America accounted for the biggest share in online ad expenditure – 39%. Indonesia, India and
Mexico proved to be the fastest growing emerging markets wherein a huge chunk of online advertising
is expected to come from. North America and Western Europe, on the other hand, had the highest
number of virtual ad spending per internet user – $168 and $112 respectively.
The report also predicted that e-commerce per user will be at $859 by the end of 2013, with
international e-commerce adding up to $917 billion, which is expected to hit the $1 trillion mark in 2013.
Online search represented 56.6% of the entire digital expenditure of ads, dominating as the biggest
subcategory within the digital media marketing mix. While the traditional advertising market has
continued to show a decline, digital advertising has grown by leaps and bounds thanks to the consistent
migration of consumers online. An increase in internet-enabled devices like smartphones and tablet has
also given online advertising a huge scope to expand.
