Is There A Severe Crunch In Educational Apps For Children?
Today, technology has paved way for a pseudo generation of children who are inextricably linked with, and are dependent on the internet, electronic gadgets, video games et al. The role of technology in the lives of today’s teens and preteens is undeniable, and ironically enough, the one platform that could have been used to educate these children about everything under the sun, is being used against them to convert them into obese, neurotic freaks who find it difficult to communicate with people who live beyond the screens of their laptops.
These very children would rather stay cooped up in their rooms than go outside and play like the children they’re supposed to be. They are spoilt for choices, and American children especially are obsessed with everything Apple. ithis, ithat… If it’s Apple, then it’s a must have. The iPad was revealed to be the most requested present by children between ages of 6 and 12 during the month of December, 2012.
There have been cases where tablets have been made just to suit the needs of children, with more developers focusing on creating apps and games meant solely for the purpose of entertainment. The children belonging to the age group of 8-13 are the ones who are most affected (or least affected, depending on how you look at it) by the lack of any educational apps. OutThink Inc. points out that 100% of game apps in the Apple App Store are for preschoolers, with 10% of that number including elementary school students.
IT companies like these that are ready to bring about a change in the prevalent trend of mindless apps made available to children. It’s dedicated to, in its own words, “launching the next generation of super scientists with a series of game based apps”. It comes up with apps for children that are interactive, fun, and informative, all at the same time.
Many children lose interest in learning as they grow up, which is where educational apps come into play. They can make a world of a difference to a child’s knowledge and intelligence; they are extremely innovative ways to teach newer things to children, thus guiding them and making them become well and more responsible adults.
